Google Introduces Ads in AI Search Summaries, Boosting Relevancy

OpenAI has unveiled 'Canvas', a new interface for its ChatGPT platform, designed for writing and coding tasks. The interface features an editable workspace where users can generate and edit AI-generated content. The introduction of 'Canvas', currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams, positions OpenAI alongside other AI providers emphasizing editable workspaces. The facility to correct and refine AI outputs without generating new material altogether could enhance efficiency and accuracy. Eventually, OpenAI plans to extend this feature to its free users.

Meta, Facebook's parent company, has announced the launching of a Gen Z-targeted redesign that highlights local community information, Facebook Groups, and videos, aiming to attract younger users. The main features include 'Local’ - a tab focusing on localized content collaboration; 'Explore' – a tab with algorithm-based personalized recommedation; full-screen video player for short and long form videos and more. The planned updates also include new Messenger features, a focus on Facebook Groups and an ""Imagine Yourself"" image-generation feature powered by Meta AI.

Google has officially begun displaying ads in its AI-generated Overviews to help users connect with relevant products and services. These ads, marked with a 'sponsored' header, will only feature in searches with a commercial nature. Adjustments have also been made to AI Overviews, including more prominently displayed cited webpages. Furthermore, AI-organised search pages showcasing custom results rather than just link lists have been introduced, initially available to US mobile users searching for recipes and meal ideas.

Meta has unveiled Movie Gen, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool capable of creating realistic video and audio clips. Still not available for public use, Movie Gen can edit existing videos and text-to-video clips by infusing new objects or altering appearances. The AI model is powered by 30 billion parameters for video generation and an additional 13 billion for audio. It may soon be implemented in platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, following its competitive edge against existing models in video quality.

The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Meta Platforms can only use partial data from Facebook users for targeted advertising, following a case launched by privacy activist Max Schrems. The ruling follows the GDPR's data minimization principle and restricts all social networks from fully utilizing personal data for advertisements. Meta responded saying it provides tools for users to manage their data usage.

Tencent and Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family are pondering a buyout of the French game developer Ubisoft. This follows Ubisoft losing over half its market value in this year alone. Tencent and Guillemot Brothers are working with advisers to examine ways to stabilize Ubisoft, with one proposal being to make the company private. Ubisoft shares rose up to 33% upon the news.

Google is beta testing a verification feature in its search engine, which displays blue checkmarks next to legitimate businesses in the results. The checkmarks are based on various criteria including website validation and Merchant Center data. Currently, this feature is only seen by selected users and Google hasn't revealed when it will be made more widely available.
