Never miss out on an opportunity, top tech news digest.

TECH BRIEF

Microsoft Build 2024 unveiled a plethora of features based on artificial intelligence, underscoring the tech giant's deepening AI focus. Key developments include updates to the AI chatbot Copilot, the integration of real-time translation for videos in the Edge browser, and the addition of new tools in Microsoft Teams. Copilot now supports GPT-4o, aids Teams' meetings, comes pre-loaded in devices such as Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11, and can assist users real-time by observing their screen activity. Microsoft also plans to launch Copilot Agents, AI assistants for business and disclosed GPT-4o availability on Microsoft's Azure AI.

Google aims to extend its dominance in search advertising by testing shopping ads within its AI-generated answers. Known as AI Overviews, this feature could help keep users from shifting to alternatives like ChatGPT or Perplexity. Revenue from search ads is critical for Google, and even minor changes can greatly impact their earnings. AI Overview will pull ads from existing campaigns, requiring no action from advertisers. Google previously stated that specific product ads would be integrated into the feature.

The shift in AI interest has spread to sectors like energy, utilities, and commodities, resulting in significant gains for these sectors. Nvidia's upcoming earnings report could shape future perceptions of AI chip demand, affecting various sectors. Additionally, the potential increase in electricity consumption from new AI data centers could benefit both traditional and alternative energy providers.

TikTok is reportedly preparing to enact substantial layoffs in its operations and marketing teams. While the exact figures remain undisclosed, it's anticipated to impact a significant portion of the nearly 1,000 employees in TikTok's global user operations, content, and marketing departments. The remaining members will be moved to TikTok's trust and safety, marketing, content, and product teams.

Amazon's cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services, has ceased orders of Nvidia's advanced superchip, substituting with the forthcoming model, Grace Blackwell. This decision comes as Nvidia's new processor is perceived as double the power capacity for training large language models. As AWS’s move is predicted to impact investor perceptions, some are questioning if tech firms will postpone purchases until the release of Blackwell.
