S&P Victory Streak Continues Despite Higher-Than-Expected PPI
Wall Street rallied despite August's Producer Price Index (PPI) being slightly higher than expected, leading to a fourth consecutive gain for the S&P 500 Index, bringing it closer to offsetting September's losses. Investors anticipate the first U.S. rate cut in nearly half a decade next week, subsequent to mixed inflation data. Notably, Micron fell by 4% due to a downgrade from BNP Paribas Exane, while Nvidia saw a 1.9% increase due to positive comments from their CEO about chip demand.
TECH BRIEF
OpenAI has introduced a new AI model, o1, capable of 'reasoning' and answering complex queries faster than humans. The model displays significant improvements in coding and multistep problem-solving compared to predecessors but is more expensive and slower. Being trained using a new optimization algorithm, reinforcement learning, o1 can process queries like a human with an evident chain of thought. It also provides superior performance in areas like mathematics and coding but lacks in factual knowledge and web-browsing abilities. The model will be accessible to users in a staged manner.
Apple is set to transform its AirPods Pro 2 into approved hearing aids through a software update, targeting roughly 30 million Americans with mild to moderate hearing loss. The move is part of Apple's plan to penetrate the potential $15-trillion health industry by 2030. Apple's wearable offerings will replace more expensive, purpose-built medical devices with features approved by the FDA. The updated AirPods offering will be cheaper than most over-the-counter hearing aids, increasing technology accessibility at mainstream purchase points.
In early 2025, Uber app users in Austin and Atlanta will access Waymo's autonomous taxis, following a successful partnership in Phoenix. The expanded collaboration reveals Uber's strategy of leveraging self-driving partnerships, with recent ties to GM's Cruise and Wayve. Moreover, it offers clues into Waymo's possible long-term plan of focusing more on technology-as-a-service while Uber manages fleet services. However, Waymo is currently under federal investigation due to crash reports and potential traffic law breaches.
Apple will permit third-party app stores on the iPad from September 16, responding to the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA mandates market fairness, and Apple has been categorized under it as a "gatekeeper" due to the significance of its platform services. Consequently, third-party browser developers can also launch browsers with personalized browser engines for the iPad. Notably, alternative platforms must have their apps notarized by Apple and agree to its business terms.
After Q2 2024 earnings, cloud software companies did not significantly adjust their full-year guidance, reflecting persisting tough selling conditions and increased competition. A mere 0.3% median full-year raise was observed compared to a 1.5% median Q2 beat. This suggests tighter margins for error in software forecasting and declines in ‘beat and raise’ scenarios. Industry analysts anticipate persistent challenging buying conditions, even if interest rates drop and IT budgets increase.

Amazon will start using its AI-shopping assistant chatbot, Rufus, to serve ads based on user information. Rufus, which recommends products and offers comparisons in conversational format, will tailor ads to user search terms and conversations. Microsoft had tested a similar approach with its chatbot, Copilot, last year.
